GHANA ACCOUNTS FOR 40% SHARE IN WEST AFRICAN AGRITECH IMPORTS
Annually over 10,000+ tractors and associated Agri implements & parts required in Ghana, making it 14% shareholder in Ghanaian Agritech import volume.
Crop care & protection among the top imported products in Ghana’s Agritech sector, followed by levellers, scrapers, mechanical shovels which are second in line with 15% share.
Irrigation setups including pipes, pumps motors is the 5th top imported items, where only 2% of agriculture land is irrigated in Ghana & West Africa.
Fertilizers, Spare parts and machine tools are other products in the top 10 complementing the Agritech requirement of Ghana with a sizeable volume.
Agriculture chemicals including crop protection chemicals like herbicides, insecticides etcs. and growth care chemicals like fertilisers imports in Ghana cross $335Mn in 2018. The use of agrochemicals, particularly pesticides, has become an integral part of the Ghanaian agricultural activities, being used on cash crops, cereals, fruits, and vegetable production. 87% of vegetable farmers use chemical pesticides to control pests and diseases and a major part of it is imported in the market from Europe and Asia.
